Gerard Westerkamp

Obituary

Gerard Westercamp, 90, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, November 7, 2008, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born January 23, 1918, in Mahaska County the son of Fedde and Anna Maria Ver Kou Westercamp. He grew up near Peoria, Iowa. He farmed west of Oskaloosa all of his life and retired from farming but continued to live on the home place. He also did carpentry work for many years. Gerard had been a member of the Vantastics, a group that visited and entertained in area nursing homes. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa. He enjoyed going to coffee at McDonald’s and speaking Dutch with those who could converse. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Clara for several years.

His family includes his wife of nearly 69 years Clara Westercamp of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Faye and Wendell Knowler of New Sharon; two sons and their wives: Roger and Darlene Westercamp and Howard and Marjorie Westercamp all of Oskaloosa; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and a great great granddaughter; and one sister, Alice Rogers of Oskaloosa.

Gerard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Brenus Westercamp.

Funeral services for Gerard Westercamp will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson and Reverend Brad Westercamp officiating. Burial will be in the Beacon Cemetery near Beacon. Visitation will begin Friday after 11 a.m. and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel Friday from 5—7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church building fund or Youth for Christ.
